How to Play Packet Defense

  1. Place firewall towers at strategic points along the packet route before each wave begins.
  2. Each tower type targets different threat types — DDoS packets, malware, and port scanners require different defences.
  3. Earn credits by destroying packets, then spend them on new towers or upgrades between waves.
  4. Upgrade towers between waves to increase their range, fire rate, and damage output.
  5. Prevent packets from reaching the server core — each packet that gets through drains your server health.

About Packet Defense

Packet Defense is a networking-themed tower defense game that teaches basic cybersecurity and network concepts through strategic gameplay. Deploy firewalls, intrusion detection systems, honeypots, and deep packet inspection nodes to stop waves of increasingly sophisticated network attacks — SYN floods, malware payloads, SQL injection attempts, and coordinated botnets. Each tower type has distinct strengths and upgrade paths.

The networking metaphors are genuine: concepts like rate limiting, packet filtering, and traffic analysis mirror real defensive security principles. Free in your browser, no download required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tower types are available?
Five tower types: firewall (general-purpose damage), IDS (intrusion detection system, slows packets), honeypot (diverts and traps threats), DPI node (deep packet inspection, extra damage to malware), and rate limiter (area-of-effect slow).
What attack types appear?
Waves include DDoS packets (high volume, low health), malware payloads (armoured, slow), port scanners (fast, evasive), SQL injection attempts (bypass some tower types), and coordinated botnets (large coordinated swarms).
Can I sell towers to reposition them?
Yes — any placed tower can be sold for 75% of its purchase cost, letting you adapt your layout as new attack patterns emerge.
Does this teach real cybersecurity concepts?
Yes — tower mechanics are modelled on real defensive techniques. Firewall rules, rate limiting, packet filtering, and honeypot deception all mirror genuine network security principles.
